Banning cellphones in schools

Post by Hulk »

So today is the first day of the second school term in New Zealand and so the law for banning cellphones in schools has taken effect.

While I understand that this may be good especially to get kids to interact with one another and to no longer have fights and bullying filmed during school time with students I find it unfair that the teachers and school staff have to police this especially when they've got a lot of other stuff to worry about and a lot of teachers have more students than they should due to funding in New Zealand.

If your country decided to ban cellphones during school time in schools do you think it would work?

I'm fortunate that I teach very young students, so I don't have to worry about this issue. :D

However, I think that it's a losing battle. I honestly think that teaching healthy and safe habits for cell phone use is the answer. Technology can also be used for instructional purposes. While it is understandable not to want students to use their phones during instruction, I don't see why they should be completely banned from schools altogether.

Well when I was in high school I think cell phones were just starting to come around more. I used to borrow my parents just in case I needed to call for a ride or whatever.

I get why they would want to. I mean I doubt it’ll go over well. I mean I don’t have a problem if kids are just using them like when they’re not in class and stuff.

The one thing that worries me is how people will react when the teachers and school staff have to try to enforce this law on their schools. Some people can get really nasty.

What does the law say that teachers and administrators must do to enforce it?

Not entirely sure but there is this advice for schools but it seems like blah blah to me :p

How do the rules need to be enforced?

Schools are able to decide how to enforce the rules. The usual behaviour management approach is likely to be appropriate, rather
than introducing specific disciplinary actions for students.

Schools that currently restrict phones follow their usual school approaches to behaviour management and discipline to implement the rules, including the use of restorative practices in some cases.

How is that any different than what was already being done in schools, then? :P

I think some schools came to the party early with phone bans while other schools didn't but now that it's enforced into law all schools must follow the same practice.

I see. It's definitely not a fun issue to have to deal with.

I'm pretty sure here in the states the people that would be in the most uproar are parents, I think they've gotten used to being able to communicate with their kids as needed throughout the day.
I bet you can't see me now!
