I'm currently trying to get a mildly aged laptop off of EBay right now cause I don't have the money for a brand new one.

How do you feel about buying used computers?

I bought an i5-based Dell Latitude laptop off eBay in 2019 or so and put an SSD in it. I used that laptop for a few years, and it was well worth the money that I spent (barely over $100). I feel that something like this is the absolute best price/performance value that you can get.

My current laptop is a second hand laptop I got at a reasonable price and it still works great. I wouldn't have got this type of laptop brand new for even double the cost I paid for this one.

Yes, used computers are definitely a better value. You can even do custom builds with used parts from eBay (usually old Intel Xeons that are modded to fit LGA 775 motherboards) for incredibly cheap.

I have the privilege of working for tech companies where customers regularly get rid of their computers to us to recycle. After we remove the drives we are usually able to take what we want. I just picked up a laptop from work that I am going to throw an SSD into and load up a Linux distro on

I used to buy refurbished ones off Dells site back in the day. Usually didn’t have any issues.

I often wonder how often people sell laptops on eBay for scrap when the only thing wrong is RAM or a drive.

I often wonder how often people sell laptops on eBay for scrap when the only thing wrong is RAM or a drive.

That would be interesting to know. It's far less common for motherboards and CPUs to go out.
