Software subscriptions

Post by TechWiz18 »

What do you think of the majority of software model's going the subscription route? I'm personally subscription exhausted, sometimes I just want to pay a single price and renew as needed lol

It's hard to say. Subscription models can be good or bad for consumers depending on how they're implemented.

This is true, I also entirely understand the reason behind doing subscriptions from a business standpoint...it's a constant stream of income but like you said...implementation is key and there really needs to be something enticing to the consumer to want to pay.

I don't like software subscriptions. I think Adobe should be purchasable one time and then you own that version for life and if you want to upgrade to a newer version you should be able to at perhaps a small discount, but the fact they moved it to a subscription based thing annoys me and it's made me move over to GIMP.

I do pay for a subscription program for my game collecting/catalogue called Game Collector or CLZ Games on mobile, I pay $40 a year for both and they sync between each other so i can keep track of all the games i own and not end up with duplicates.

I think another thing I get from a software support perspective...is you are streamlining your customer service/support by not having all of these different versions running about.

HOWEVER! If you don't want this to be a problem...companies like Adobe could simply pick an EOL for the software and stop providing support for it...then it is the choice of the consumer whether they think they should upgrade or not.

I think a lot of companies went this subscription route also to try and circumvent piracy...however, from what I have seen in the community (not specifically here) is that where there is a will there is a way and folks have figured out how to get these things free anyway despite the subscriptions.

Circumventing piracy is always going to be an uphill battle for these companies. I think their best bet is to make buying the product a more attractive option. Steam and similar services have done this very nicely for the gaming industry.
